Andrew McCord

Andrew McCord is training to become an electrician.

We spoke to Andrew to find out more about his life, changes, and future ambitions in the trades.

How long have you been studying for a qualification in the trades?

I have been studying for a trade qualification since 2010 and I am enjoying it a lot.

How are you finding the balance between theory and practical training?

There is more practical training than I thought initially there would be. The theory is really well explained and you have enough time to look through the books and find all the regulations. The practical training is backing the theoretical knowledge we have gained in class.

What kind of things have you been doing in the practical training?

We have wired different lighting circuits, a low voltage light; this also includes inspecting and testing.

What is the plan after you finish the course and become fully qualified?

I would like to be self- employed and run my own business. My business would include everything related to electrics…testing, wiring and other kinds of domestic installation work.

Where would you like to set up your own business?

I live in Northampton and this is the place where I think it would be best to start my own business.

Can you tell us about previous employment you have had in the past?

Well, I have always worked in the same trade; I have been working for 9 years as an electrical panel wireman and haven’t had any other careers.

Why did you choose to become an electrician and pursue a trade’s career?

My father was an electrician too, so it is kind of a family trade. If I ever need any help my father would always help me.

What advice would you give to anyone who is thinking of signing up to the course?

I would recommend the course to anyone who would like to pursue a career in the trades.
